NUP Canada Diaspora Ottawa Convention 2026

NUP Canada Diaspora Conference 2026 in Ottawa with Uganda theme.

Welcome

NUP CANADA DIASPORA OTTAWA CONFERENCE 2026

Theme: A NEW UGANDA NOW: KEEPING THE FLAME OF HOPE BURNING!

The Unfinished Promise of Liberation: Political Memory, Exile, Accountability and Uganda’s Struggle for Democracy, 1962–2026

“Keep the flame of hope burning.” We often hear these words in times of despair. But where do we find hope, and how do we sustain it?

This conference will explore these questions through the struggles and lived experiences of political leaders, grassroots activists and foot soldiers, journalists, lawyers, researchers, diaspora communities and activists in exile. Focusing on the National Unity Platform (NUP), rooted in the People Power Movement, we will examine how hope survives repression, imprisonment, displacement and electoral setbacks—and how collective action can advance democracy and social justice.

Drawing on historical research, speeches, interviews, oral histories and documentary storytelling, discussions will connect Uganda’s unfinished promises of independence and liberation with contemporary demands for freedom, constitutionalism and accountable leadership. We will explore political memory, including the sacrifices of Luwero communities and the legacy of national honours such as the Nalubaale Medal, alongside the experiences surrounding the 2021 and 2026 elections.

The conference will also examine diaspora political engagement, the protection of political exiles, transnational repression and accountability for public resources used in diaspora activities. These discussions will emphasize evidence, testimony and transparent examination of organizational and financial records.

Through dialogue on the NUP’s A New Uganda Now Manifesto 2026–2031, historical and contemporary resistance, and movement achievements, participants will consider how democratic aspirations can become practical commitments to human rights, economic opportunity, national unity and institutions that serve the people.

Our purpose is to preserve political memory, strengthen solidarity across borders and identify meaningful ways for Ugandans at home and abroad to turn hope into sustained democratic action.

Why Attend?

WHY ATTEND THE NUP CANADA DIASPORA OTTAWA CONFERENCE 2026?

A NEW UGANDA NOW: KEEPING THE FLAME OF HOPE BURNING!

“Keep the flame of hope burning.” We often hear these words in times of despair. But where do we find hope, and how do we sustain it?

Join us to explore how our shared experiences, sacrifices and collective action can sustain Uganda’s struggle for freedom, democracy and social justice. Grounded in the National Unity Platform (NUP) and its roots in the People Power Movement, this gathering offers an opportunity to connect Uganda’s political history with the urgent question of what we can do together today.

Attend to:

  • Connect and build solidarity. Exchange perspectives with fellow Ugandans, diaspora organizers, activists and allies committed to a democratic Uganda.
  • Learn from lived experiences. Explore the journeys of political leaders, grassroots activists, foot soldiers, journalists, lawyers and people living in exile.
  • Understand our history and its unfinished promises. Reflect on independence, liberation struggles, the sacrifices of Luwero communities and the continuing demand for accountable leadership.
  • Strengthen the diaspora’s role. Discuss how Ugandans abroad can support democratic participation, defend freedom of expression and address intimidation across borders.
  • Engage with evidence and accountability. Examine how research, testimony, political memory and scrutiny of public resources can inform advocacy and public debate.
  • Turn hope into action. Explore how the vision of a New Uganda can guide practical collaboration on human rights, constitutionalism, economic opportunity and national unity.

Whether you are a longtime organizer, a young person seeking a role in shaping Uganda’s future, or an ally committed to justice, your experience and ideas can contribute to this conversation.

Come to connect, reflect and help build the collective commitment that keeps hope alive.
